5.1.9 Do I need to have the Nokia Cellular Data Suite to use
VisualGSM Enterprise with Nokia Handsets?
This depends on what handset device you use. Many
lower cost Nokia handsets do not natively support the SMS
protocols, so you need to use the Cellular Data Suite (CDS)
to translate the proprietary x/BUS to the ETSI protocols. You
use the CDS which creates a Virtual COM port, and this is
used by VisualGSM Enterprise, rather than the actual port
to which the handset is connected.
More advanced Nokia handsets do not need the CDS,
these include the 7110, 8850, 8250, 6210.

5.2 Problems connecting to
Console Manager or Starting
VisualGSM Service
VisualGSM Enterprise is a database application, and the
database which contains VisualGSM tables and configuration
settings must be online in order for VisualGSM Enterprise to
start. To connect to the database, you will need to preset the
correct username/password using the Manager Console.
5.2.1 The Manager Console displays an error stating “Please
config system ODBC:VisualGSMAdmin” during logon.
This means that the System Data Source VisualGSMAdmin
does not exist or is not properly setup. Go to Control Panel

DSN Tab. Check that VisualGSMODBC and
VisualGSMAdmin exists and is configured under the correct
database used by VisualGSM. See figure and example
below for configuring DSN for MSSQL.
Open Control Panel window, you will see different icons as
shown in Pic 1.

Double click on ODBC Data Source Administrator icon.
Now you will see ODBC Data Source Administrator window
(as shown below).
Select System DSN tab, and click Add.

SQL Server driver and click Finish.
In this example I am using DSN name as MyDSN.
Enter the name you like to use for DSN and then choose
SQL Server to which you want to connect. If SQL Server is
located on the same machine you can choose Local. If
Server is not located on the same machine then you need
to enter the IP Address or domain name to connect to that
Server.
Enter the domain name or IP Address and Click Next.

Choose authenication method. Enter your Login ID and
Password to connect to SQL Server and Click Next two
time to skip next Screen, then Click Finish.
At last step you will have the option to test your
Connection.
5.2.2 The Manager Console displays an error stating “Can’t or
cannot connect to MySQL/MSSQL/Oracle” during logon.
This means that the database VisualGSM is using has not
started. Go to Control Panel
Services to start your

ORACLE:
5.2.3 The Manager Console displays an error stating “Access
denied for User” during logon.
This means that the database was not set up properly or
the username/password used for login is wrong, and
hence, VisualGSM Enterprise cannot perform as intended.

Try clicking on the DB setup icon and reconfigure the
database. Also, go to Console
Service Database
Connection Setting (see figure 4.12), and reconfirm the
username and passwords. This setting is recorded as
encoded parameters in the system registry, and is used by
the server for accessing the database.

5.2.4 The Service Connection Setting is greyed out. I cannot
start the service as the database user and password is
incorrect.
The Service Connection Setting is stored on VisualGSM
server Windows registry, and therefore can only be
configured locally. If your VisualGSM server setting is not
localhost, it will be greyed out.
5.2.5 The Service Manager displays “Please configure
VisualGSMODBC”

This means that the the server is unable to connect to the
database driver either because VisualGSMODBC does not
exist or is corrupted. Please configure VisualGSMODBC
under Control Panel

5.2.6 The Service Manager displays “Cannot connect to
MYSQL/MSSQL/ORACLE….”
This means that the server is unable to connect to the
database despite the manager being able to establish
connection. The reason is probably due to incorrect
setting under Console
Service Database Connection
Setting. (See figure below.) Whenever you change the
database password (other than the default used by
VisualGSM during installation), or database to connect to,
you will need to update Service Database Connection
Setting.
