Book Tab or a series of phone numbers.  The method does
a direct SQL INSERT into loglog table and bypasses any
HTTP listener.  You can schedule messages in advance by
selecting the datetime under WhenToSend.   If you have
defined an SMPP connection, you can select the gateway
from the Communication Method dropdown menu.
Tip: if you have enabled “Require Acknowledgement for
Outgoing SMS” under Console -> Configuration ->Others
Tab -> Acknowledgement Setting Section, you can request
the recipient to acknowledge your message with a reply
by checking the “Check Acknowledge” feature.  Enter a
unique ‘reply’ string.  Refer to 4.2.4.17 Others Tab –
Emergency Setting Section for more information.
Note: if you have enabled Delivery Reports feature (this
can be done so under Console -> Configuration ->
General Tab – Delivery Report Section), you can indicate
whether you want to track the message status of your
outgoing message by selecting a Delivery Report Action
level.  (default = 0, which means no tracking of message
status).  Refer to 4.2.5.10, Delivery Report Tab, for more
information on how to set Delivery Report Actions).
Note: Message priority can be specified for each message
sent.  A message with a higher priority will always be sent
before a message with lower priority.  Even if a system is in
the midst of group broadcasting a long list of recipients,
you can send out an important message by indicating a
message priority that is higher than the group broadcast.
Note: Language Character Sets option is used to select a
font that will support your language.  Certain Unicode
characters are supported only under certain fonts.  You
can also set the encoding that VisualGSM uses to process
the outgoing message using the Language/Charset
dropdown menu.
From v4.5.x, VisualGSM Enterprise supports WAP Push
messaging.  With WAP Push one can send messages
consisting of WAP/WML pages containing information and
links for the user to access other mobile services. Using WAP
Push, one can make it easier for users to discover and
access new mobile services.

WAP Push messages can incorporate both/either expiry
and creation dates.  It is possible to replace an existing
WAP Push message in a recipient Service Inbox by sending
another WAP Push message referencing to the same URL
with a later date.  You can also delete an existing WAP
Push message by sending a WAP Push message
referencing the same URL with the ‘delete’ action type.
Only recipients whose mobile plans have WAP/GPRS
access and have their phones pre-configured with
WAP/GPRS settings can download resources referenced
from WAP Push messages.  Most mobile telcos provide OTA
or Over-the-air configuration service, so mobile users can
request for a download of the configuration to their
phones.

4.2.5.10 Delivery Report Tab
This allows users to define up to 10 levels of actions, with a pre-
defined interval between consecutive actions, when the
message status of a particular outgoing message is still ‘pending’
– in other words, no confirmation of receipt (or ‘delivered’ status
report) by the mobile recipient is received from the SMSC.
There are 5 types of action to select from: resend SMS, send
email to defined addresses, send SMS to defined mobiles, EXE
command, and HTTP/URL.  For more information on how to use
symbols such as {M}, {N}, and {SMSC}, refer to 4.2.5.3 Keyword
Tab.

Figure 4.51 : Delivery Report Tab
Tip: the Delivery Reporting feature is not available for all
VisualGSM Enterprise licenses.  Please check with your vendor if
this feature is not available.
Note: to use delivery report, you need to start VisualGSM service
with delivery reports enabled.  You can do so under Console ->
Configuration ->  General Tab – Delivery Report Section.  Refer to
4.2.4.3 General Tab – Delivery Report Section, for more
information.  (Remember to restart the service after changing
any configuration in Console -> Configuration).
Besides enabling delivery reports, you need to indicate for every
message sent if delivery reports is required.  This is done by
selecting the levels of delivery report actions (up to) – see
highlighted red box in diagram below.  The default level is zero –
no delivery report.

Tip: in most cases, Delivery Reports can only work if the message
is sent within the same carrier, e.g. Carrier A handset to Carrier A
handset.  Modem auto-routing, if properly configured, can
ensure messages are sent within the same network by matching
recipient mobile number prefix with the carrier (to which the
prefix comes under as defined in network code) that
corresponds to a particular modem port.  If a message is sent
from one network to another, in most cases, the status report is
only up till deliverance of the message to the recipient Telco’s
SMSC.
Tip: status reports are treated as incoming messages and will
contribute to the total amount of messages the modem can
handle within a specified period of time.  Hence, the number of
messages each modem can handle is reduced if status reports
are enabled.

Frequently Asked Questions
(Troubleshooting)
This chapter will document some frequently asked question
concerning VisualGSM Enterprise as well as to serve as a
troubleshooting guide to help users get the best out of the
software.
IMPORTANT: Please refer to VisualGSM’s support website for an
updated list of FAQ.
5.1 GSM/GPRS device/SIM card
related Issues
5.1.1 The LED on the GSM/GPRS modem is not lighted
up/blinking (Wavecom Modem only).
This means that the GSM/GPRS modem is not powered up.
Check that the modem is connected to the adapter
correctly and that the power is turned on.  Try to use
another adapter if this fails.  Adapters can normally be
purchased from an electronic shop.  Just ensure the Amps
and Volts are correct.
5.1.2 The LED is lighted up/blinking but service manager is
unable to start even though I have clicked on the start service
button.  An “Access Denied” error is displayed on the Service
Manager.
Please check that the modem is connected to your
computer’s serial port and make sure that it is connected
to the correctly configured port. You can also choose to
change the port settings. Also ensure that the default

baud rate of 115200 is chosen.
You will get an ACCESS DENIED error if another application
has opened your serial port.  A serial port cannot be
shared between applications.  Close the other appliation
using the serial port, e.g. PDA desktop sync application.
5.1.3 The LED is lighted up, but not blinking (Wavecom
Modem).
This indicates that there is no reception or the modem is
not properly started. Try switching off and then on the
power supply to the modem, and wait for one minute.  If
the modem still does not blink, contact your dealer.  Other
brands of modem may have different indicators.
5.1.4 I’m using a phone with a data cable and the service
manager is unable to start.
VisualGSM Enterprise will work with any device that
supports Mobile Originate & Terminate SMS via a serial
connection as per the ETSI 07.05 "Block" or "PDU" mode
protocol.  Most handsets do support this, with the
exception of some low-end Nokia handsets, (see FAQ 5.1.9
-
Do I need to have the Nokia Cellular Data Suite to use
VisualGSM Enterprise with Nokia Handsets) for further
information.
Before determining compatibility using Hyperterminal
(VisualGSM uses the same serial connection method as
Hyperterminal), first make sure that the correct PC-Phone
data cable is connected to the computer’s serial port and
ensure that it is connected to the correctly configured
port.  Some OEM manufactured cables do not work
properly.  Then, make sure that the baud rate is adjusted
to 19200 for data cable connection, and 115200 for
infrared connection.
Some phones can interface with VisualGSM using IrDA, but
only for experimental usage.  If you use IrDA with Win2k,
ensure you have service pack 2 installed.  If not, download

Now, to determine if you will be able to use your device
with VisualGSM Enterprise, please follow the steps below:
1. Check that you can "talk" to the device via the COM
port on your PC. To do this, use a standard terminal
program such as Windows HyperTerminal, configure
HyperTerminal to use the COM port the device is
connected to, set the speed to 9600 (GSM modem) or
19200 (GSM phone) and type "AT" followed by enter.  If the
device does not respond with "OK" then something is
wrong, and you will need to resolve this before VisualGSM
Enterprise can work.
2. If you do get an "OK" back, configure VisualGSM
Enterprise to use the same COM Port and Speed settings as
HyperTerminal. For the other settings, try to choose from
the available default settings one from the same
manufacturer as your device, alternatively, try the settings
for the Nokia 7110, as these work with most devices.
3. If VisualGSM Enterprise fails to connect to the device, or
does not work properly, then please send us the log along
with the model of the device to support@visualgsm.com,
and we will access and revert to you as soon as possible.
For a detailed explanation of the test procedure, please
check the  “How to test your GSM/GPRS device/SIM card
using Windows Hyperterminal” PDF document.
Note:- GSM/GPRS modems from Falcom, Wavecom,
Maxon, Nokia, Siemens and Ericsson are normally
compatible with VisualGSM Enterprise.
5.1.5 The LED on the Wavecom GSM/GPRS modem is lighted
up but not blinking.
The other possibility is the SIM card is not inserted into the
modem yet. Place the modem into the proper slot and
wait a while for the initialization before the LED starts to
blink.

Note:- Other GSM/GPRS modems may not blink, e.g.
displays a yellow LED to show offline status.
5.1.6 I get a “CPIN” error while starting the service Manager.
The server fails to start.
This could be because your SIM card is locked. For data
cable users, just enter the phone lock or the SIM card lock
when you turn phone on. For Wavecom modem users, you
must first stop the service, take out the SIM card, place into
a mobile phone, and remove any PIN set for the SIM card.
Once that is done, replace the SIM card back into the
modem, and then start the service again.
5.1.7 How many SMS messages can I send out per minute?
The throughput for Mobile Originate SMS, as used by
VisualGSM Enterprise is approximately 1 message every 3-6
seconds, so the equates to around 10 messages per
minute if “Pause Interval to Check Incoming SMS”
configuration in Console
Configuration
Special Tab is
set to zero.
This throughput is not a limitation of VisualGSM Enterprise,
but rather the GSM network quality.  You can achieve
greater throughput by using multiple modems.  You can
increase throughput under low network quality conditions
by lowering the “message retry” configuration under
Console
Configuration
Special Tab.  However, this will
be at the expenses of having more messages that fail to
send out.  It is also good to lower this configuration if you
feel that there are a lot of invalid mobile numbers.
5.1.8 Do I have to get my own SIM card and how much does
one SMS cost?
The answer is yes.  You should get a mobile plan with SMS
capability.  Different mobile companies in different
countries will charge their rates differently. Therefore, it is
important that you find out the rates and get an optimum
